BARANGAY BEL_AIR LADY CHAIR's ENVIRONMENT INITIATIVE LAUDED

No less than the president of the Institute of Governance and Sustainable Development based in Washington, DC., Durwood Zaelke , retired chief justice Hilario G. Davide Jr., noted environmental lawyer Antonio A. Oposa, Jr. have extended their congratulations and commendation to Barangay Bel-Air, Makati through its chair, Ms. Constancia Lichauco for initiating early this year an edible rain garden in the village.

In a letter sent through the Pasalamat sa Katauhan, these environmental stalwarts lauded chairperson Lichauco noting that “it had to take the nurturing nature of women, under your leadership, to implement laws that have long languished in the sickbed of non-compliance. We admire the noble effort of your officers and residents- men and women of modest hearts and minds-to put the idea into practice.”

Together with other signatories of the letter in the persons of Negros Occidental Governor Alfredo G. Maranon Jr., UN-Environment International Law Unit Head in Kenya, Andrew David Raine, Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor Sr., Cebu Governor Hilario P. Davide III and Visayas Deputy Ombudsman Paul E.M. Clemente, the efforts of Bgy. Bel-Air was noted as it could blaze the trail for the rest of 42,000 barangays nationwide to emulate.

Bgy. Bel-Air’s contribution is a welcome move as it supports the DENR’s environment initiative in urban areas as it responds to concerns on urban heat, floods, water scarcity especially during summer months.
